Dub Naruto Thread

Well, I decided to bring back this thread from the old forums.  Might as well get right into it with the review of last Saturday's episode!

Oh, almost forgot.  The edits are found by Stewie Griffin at the NarutoFan forums (although this week's was done by Naru-chacha).

Episode 13
Haku’s Secret Jutsu; Crystal Ice Mirrors!

Well, other than a couple of stupid edits, this episode was kept pretty intact.  I still love this VA choice for Haku, and it looks like the majority of the good parts of the Mirror fight should be kept, from what we've seen in this episode.  I still wonder how Kyuubi Naruto would sound.  Wouldn't it be wierd if they kept his JP voice for when he is in Kyuubi mode (you can tell when that is becuase his voice in more graveley), but with subtitles?  That would be wierd, but I think it would be awesome.  It would show how different Naruto and Kyuubi are in personality and such.  Anyway, enough jabbering.  On to the.....

Cuts/Edits:
1) Hijutsu; Sensatsu Suishou was translated as Secret Jutsu; A Thousand Needles of Death
2) In the dub, Tsunami quotes, "I'll do anything", while in the original, she said something like, "I'll bite through my own tounge and drown in my own blood" when Gato's thugs threaten her..... Kinda suggestive if you ask me. But the original dialogue seems too graphic for the American/Canadian audience...
3) When Kakashi disses Zabuza and describes Naruto after Sasuke knocks down Haku, he is zoomed out pretty fast on the dub, whereas in the original
4) Hijutsu; Makyou Hyoshou was translated as Secret Jutsu; Crystal Ice Mirrors. So, the “Demonic” part was left out, probably will be kept on the DVDs
5) When the screen goes black, only one bloodspurt is shown, whereas in the original, many a bloodspurts are shown

here are some that Naru-chacha missed but joby2too found:
1) When Naruto kicks the two samurais blood flies up in the beginning of the episode. This was removed in the english version.
2) A pointless edit but at one point while Naruto is talking to Inari after he saved him from the two samurais, Naruto smiles showing his teeth in the english version while in the japanese version he only has a line drawn for his smile.
3) Another pointless edit, while Kakashi compliments Sakura on the bridge, in the japanese version she sticks out her tongue the whole time as he gives her the compliment. In the english, she smiles and then sticks out her tongue a few moments later...

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

It's time for....

Episode 14
The Number One Hyperactive, Knucklehead Ninja Joins The Fight!

Neato, they kept the term Kekkei Genkai in it.  That was unexpected.  Also, it was neat how the dub added in that CG model of DNA when explaining how bloodlines work.  Well, other than that, there isn't much to say about this episode, so I guess that means I'll jump to the.....

Cuts/Edits:
1) During the flashbacks, just before we see Naruto being dragged down, blood splashes are deleted on the previous scene.
2) This already happened, but I guess I’ll report it again; just before the needles hit Zabuza, the screen blacks out, and the blood splashing on the background once again deleted.
3) Kekkei Genkai was kept, albeit translated right before.

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

Actually Viz stated that they would only be editting Naruto for tv.  The Dvds are gonna be uncut and uncensored.   Just think how good One Piece could have been if it had got the same treatment as Naruto.   Aright the Apis arc was cut out,  but so was a hell of a lot more eps as they fats tracked to Chopper

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

NOOOOOOO!  Someone else posted in my beautiful thread!

Aww...I was hoping to have it interrupted, so that it could be read one after the other.  Oh well.

Almost forgot to mention:  the edits are now looked up and listed by joby2too.

Episode 15
Zero Visibility: The Sharingan Shatters!

Oh my fucking god!  Only one edit!!!!!  Ahem...that aside, it was a really good episode.  The only thing that I didn't like is the fact that, because of this eidt, we were left staring at nothing for about 10 seconds.  Still, Viz is showing that they REALLY don't want to fuck the series up.  Now all they need to do is replace Mailie Flannigan, and all is well in the world.  Oh well, enough useless chatter.  ARE YOU READY FOR SOME EDIT(S)?

Cuts/Edits:
1) During the very last scene when Sakura screams the camera shifts to the sky. In the original japanese version, blood was supposed to spurt upward leaving the viewer in suspense of who got hurt. In the english, the blood was removed.

Translation changes (we've heard em all already, but they said the names again):
1) Sasuke's Katon; Goukakyuu no Jutsu was translated to Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu

2)Naruto's Kage Bunshin no Jutsu was translated to Shadow Clone Jutsu

3)Zabuza's Ninpou: Kirigakure no Jutsu was translated to Ninja Art: Hidden Mist Jutsu

4) Zabuza's Mizu Bunshin no Jutsu was translated to Water Clone Jutsu

and last but not least...
5)Kakashi's Suiton: Daibakufu no Jutsu was translated to Water Style: Giant Vortext Jutsu

Keep up the good work on findin em joby!

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

It's time for yet another review/listing.  I would've done it sooner, but I lost the episodes, therefore I had to wait for joby2too's Edit List again.

Episode 16
The Broken Seal

Hmmm...there were only 2 edits in the episode.  Well...3, if you count the fact that they used the same edit in 2 different scenes.  Anyway, on to Kyuubi's voice, the most important part of this episode.  I thought it was really good.  However, unlike almost everyone at NarutoFan, I DON'T think it is better than the original.  Also, I like the fact that Sasuke kept the k-word when mentioning Itachi.  Also, did anyone notice that when it showed all the mini-screens of flashbacks, it had both the kiss and Naruto stabbing his hand, both fully uncensored.  Dun know if they forgot to or just didn't want to mess with it.  Anyway, lets get to the...

Cuts/Edits:
1) When the scene shifted outward so Sasuke's whole body could be seen, the puddle of blood under Sasuke's feet was removed.
2) When Sasuke was hit with all the needles, in 2 scenes some of the needles were removed from his arm.

No one needs to flame naruto nowadays, the fillers flame themselves. And the original poster was wanting this thread to be as interruption-free as possible, as it chronicles the differences between the dub and original version.

I have an annoucement to make.

I am staying at my friend's house in Reno from the 27th until the 2nd.  His comp is busted, so I'll write ep. 17's review when I get back.  Oh well, I just unlocked Yondaime in NH3, so that'll keep me busy.

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

Well...I'm a bit behind, aren't I?  Which is why I'm going to make it up with doing both 17 and 18 in one post, to catch up!

Episode 17
White Past: Hidden Ambition

Well, that was a pretty accurate translation of the title.  I wonder if they're gonna change the really stupid titles, like "Oh, Rock Lee!  So this is how a man lives!"....WTF!  That is the stupidest title ever!

Anywayyyyyy, the episode was really good.  Only a few minor edits, including the stupid red/blue background change.  Oh well, at least they don't get rid of the scene completely.  Also, I think that they did really well with the showing of Haku's past.  Oh well, guess I better list the....

Cuts/Edits (credit to joby2too, as always):
1) After Naruto breaks free of Haku's jutsu he punches him hard in the face. As Haku recovers from the punch he spits blood out of his mouth which was edited out of the english version.

2) During the flashback with Haku and his parents; right before Haku unleashes the ice attack on his own house the scene zooms into Haku's eyes and a blue background appears. In the japanese version, the background is red (probably to symbolize blood since Haku just killed his father and the other men in the room).

3) Kakashi stops Zabuza straight in his tracks by using the Ninja Art Summoning: Earth Style Fanged Pursuit Jutsu. As Kakashi tells Zabuza about his failed ambitions the scene changes and shows Zabuza running away from other ninjas. When the scene changes the red background was changed to a blue background.

4) During the preview for episode 018 entitled "The Weapons Known as Shinobi", the blood on Kakashi's face was removed in the english version.

5)  During the flashback, they also edited Hakus mother's slap. They cut the part where she raises her hand and hits him and just left the sound and showed his face afterwards.

Move name Changes:
1)Kakashi's Doton · Tsuiga no Jutsu was translated to Ninja Art Summoning: Earth Style Fanged Pursuit Jutsu.

2) Kakashi's Raikiri was translated to Lightning Blade (although I'm pretty sure it means Lightning Edge).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, without further ado (what the hell does that mean anyway?)

Episode 18
The Weapons known as Shinobi

Woo boy, this was the one.  The episode we KNEW couldn't be uncut.  However, they left in a shitload more than we thought they would.  VERY well done.  the only blood that was edited would have to be the blood that "flew" or "fell".  Otherwise, it was kept.  Also, I was watching the sub at the same time, and the dub showed something to clear a plot hole up that the sub didnt.  In the sub, that Raikiri only about halfway pierced Haku (as shown with the energy), yet there are blood coming from a big hole in his back.  However, the dub cleared that up by having the energy go completely through his body (ya know, like how the manga showed it).  Well, better get on to the list of...

Edits:

Before I list, I am saying that I will only call it "Edits" and not "Cuts/Edits", since cuts are when a scene is completely taken out, which is not something the Naruto dub does.  Also, joby2too is taking too long, so I'll do the edit listing myself.

1)  I better categorize the different blood bits for Haku, so that the numbers dun go into the teens.
     A)  Still showed the sparks in the dark, but edited showing them turn into blood.
     B)  Blood gushing in first ground shot.
     C)  When Haku's head slumps over, the blood gush is removed.
     D)  Removed the creepy screen of showing Haku's dead-yet-happy face.
     E)  2nd ground shot, more gushing removed.
     F)  There was no longer blood coming out of Haku's left eye after his death.
Okay, onto the other edits

2)  Zabuza was still stabbed, they just didn't leave the kunai in his arms.

3)  Removed the needles that were in Sasuke's neck.

We knew they were coming, but we still got a good result from what they did.

True...but this isn't Speed Grapher we're talking about.  These are MINOR edits compared to what would happen if they tried to show THAT on Toonami.

Anyway....Since the episode came out a day earlier in Canada, I was able to watch it early today.  Just been too busy at NarutoFan to write my post here.  So, here is...

Episode 19
The Demon in the Snow

Wow.  Just....wow.  Steve, you deserve a fucking Emmy.  No wait, screw the Emmys, they're practically worthless (not as worthless as a Grammy though).  Have an Oscar, I think they'll let it slide that it's not a movie!

Ahem *cough*, now....uhhh, well, there were some edits in this episode (and one un-edit), but only 2 were really noticable.  I guess that most of the blood was kept in for....ya know, the point of sacrifice (and making him look like the biggest badass in history).  Also...we need to do something about Maile Flannigan's acting.  She was angry in a scene that was supposed to convey sadness!  Also, WOOOO.  GAARA!  OMGWTFBBQ!!!111one!1eleven

Edits:
1)  Although Gatou did still kick Haku, they just didnt show it.

2)  Blood taken away from the close-up shot of Zabuza's kunai when he slashed that guy's neck

3)  Gatou's flying blood (well, at least 2 drops of it.  The rest was actually blood) was turned into spit.

Also, to repeat myself

WOOOOOOOOOOOO

GAARA IS NEXT!!!!

naruto fan...i'll leave that one alone.

Wasn't Gatou supposed to lose his head? Maybe didn't remember it right?
And didn't Kakashi's hand originally go into Haku for the Raikiri? I maybe wrong, it's just how I remembered it. I haven't seen or read those parts in a while.

Only the manga did that.  The anime in Japan edited it so that it could still go into the "Golden Time" (think PrimeTime) slot.

Re: Dub Naruto Thread

Sry I'm late.  I spent Saturday night seeing the show Mystere at the Treasure Island and...wait, none of you live in Las Vegas, you dun know what the hell I'm talking bout.  Long story short, I had to download it to see it.

Before I go into episode 20, I wanted to list the un-edit in episode 19, since I forgot to then.

Un-edit:
1.  In episodes 16-18, the needles in Sasuke's neck were removed.  In 19, however, they were put back in.

Anyway...

Episode 20
A New Chapter Begins, The Chunin Exam!

Well....they spelled chunnin wrong, but I'll let it slide.  It's pronounced the same in Japanese anyway.  Well, I only noticed one edit in this episode.  That's a good sign.  Also, I like how they kept Sakura's CHA! on the rock.  Temari and Kankuro's VAs....meh.  Gaara's.....SQUEE!!!!  Who is that?  It sounds so perfect, yet I can't remember it from anywhere.  Anyway, for the....

Edits:
1)  When Sakura initially punches Naruto, there should be blood coming from his nose and a little bit from the mouth.  However, the blood was only edited out in the close up of his face from the punch.  It was in all the other angles.

Can't wait.  2 more episodes until Lee, and 10 more until we can hear Orochimaru!

The edited english-only ones are coming in March.  But...the uncut boxsets (13 episodes for $30?!  They must be insane....or quite possibly geniouses!) are coming somewhere around July.

I'll wait for you ( i have a feeling you'll get them) to comment on them before I go to buy them.  But you must tell me if then Sub's are any good ( I.E. They don't change ANBU or the name of the katas. that was gay, I hate that in this dub.) but Arigato for the information!!!

It depends on the name.  I know that ANBU is kept, since it was called ANBU in episode...i think it was 10 or 11.  Also, from the InuYasha DVDs (since they are also part of ViZ), they keep some things, but translate others.  For example, they translate the moves, but subs still say "Houshi-sama" when Sango refers to Miroku.
